Which Bible Translation is the Best?
This question is highly debated, but I trust modern scholarship and really enjoy several translations. As a linguist, I have to appreciate the different methods of translation. You may be wondering? “Why so many translations? Can’t they agree on what it says?” Well Greek is a difficult language with its various tenses and mood not found in English as well as it grammar constructs. For example, I speak Spanish and some French, I have studied other languages like German, Arabic and Mandarin and all are wonderful in their own regards, but each in translation, you cannot simply translate word for word into English. The nuances of each language is unique to its own and thus a simple sentence may be translated several different ways and still be correct!
My Favorite Translation:
English
The English Standard Version (ESV) is an essentially literal translation of the Bible in contemporary English. Created by a team of more than 100 leading evangelical scholars and pastors, the ESV Bible emphasizes word-for-word accuracy, literary excellence, and depth of meaning.
The New American Standard Bible (NASB) is a smooth reading Bible translation with accuracy you can trust. Originally produced in 1971 and updated in 1995, the NASB is widely embraced and trusted as a literal English translation. The NASB provides superior accuracy with clarity and readability to inspire greater understanding.
There are many other great translations, and also some not so great and even highly heretical translations and paraphrases such as the Passion translation or the Jehovah’s Witness’s New World Translation, both of which handle the translation of scripture recklessly in order to support their own theological leanings.
Spanish
La Biblia de las Américas (LBLA) is an original work translated from the Hebrew-Aramaic and Greek directly into modern Spanish. La Biblia de las Américas presents the Word of God in a clear and flowing style while maintaining accuracy.
Nueva Biblia de las Américas (NBLA) While La Biblia de las Américas uses the Vosotros form of Spanish, Nueva Biblia de las Américas (NBLA) uses the Ustedes form of Spanish and incorporates features to help the reader deeply understand the text.
Following the same principles of translation as the NASB, the LBLA and NBLA are understandable to everyone and also suitable for serious study and preaching.
